Light touches the world and immediately brings it to life. It shapes and forms everything in its path—that is what inspires me most in painting!
Trying to capture that light, whether intense or subtle, is the driving force behind my love of creating art. I believe any subject matter can be an interesting, moving or beautiful painting, depending on that light.
I am continually balancing out painting the manmade with painting the natural world and interested in the intersection of the two.
I enjoy painting a wide variety of subjects—from machines to vegetables to waterfalls—but seem to gravitate toward close-ups of nature or things that may seem ordinary. My hope is that my paintings bring further inspection and appreciation of a subject.
My art is representational and I had been painting primarily in watercolor or acrylics until recently, when I’ve started to work in oils as well. I love the contrast of working with each medium—the smooth flow of the watercolor brush on paper—the impulsive dabs of solid color of acrylic or oil on canvas.
Bringing a painting to life from a stark white sheet of paper or canvas never gets old for me.
Although I grew up in upstate New York, I spent most of my adult life in the Midwest until moving to the Finger Lakes region of New York in late 2013 to be near family once more. I’ve rediscovered the beauty here and enjoy plein air painting as well.
