I am British artist born in Yorkshire, and for most of my career I have lived in London. I also lived in Singapore for eight years, where I had the opportunity to live and travel around Asia. Travelling is a great passion and the thing that absolutely inspires me the most.
I love the thrill of arriving in a new place with my camera and sketchbook and soaking up the buildings, nature, local colours and the customs which directly inspire my work.
I am a painter and a printmaker and currently have a studio in my home in Surrey which is outside of London. My current body of work focuses on architectural landmarks—favourite buildings from Singapore and London.
I began this series in Singapore as the city changes constantly with its new supersized architecture jostling alongside the colonial architecture of the city which is part of its heritage.
I create large paintings on canvas and limited edition prints on paper. My mixed media paintings feature elements of printmaking, mostly monoprinting, hand cut stencils and linocuts. I combine these elements of printmaking with acrylic paint, paint markers, wax pastels and sometimes gold or silver leaf and collage.
I use monoprint to build up line details, for instance in drawing people such as in the foyer of my “Liberty of London” painting, or my “Raffles Hotel” painting. Each work has many layers incorporating glazes and hand drawn text.
I love to capture the energy and mood of a building and do this through the colour palette I use. I visit the site or area I am painting to soak up the feel of the place, hoping I can communicate this in my paintings. People, I have discovered, have very tangible emotional connections to buildings and places. My paintings can hopefully connect them to a particular memory. My artwork is about connections and journeys. I learned so much and developed my art practice while living in a new country. It was transformational.
Every year I develop new goals. Over the last couple of years I launched my Affordable Art Collection Limited Edition Prints which have been a huge success. I send them all over the world via my online shop.
This coming year I am expanding my London Landmark paintings series and I am open to collaborations for designing textiles for interiors—something I have desired to do for a long time. My artwork is collected by the French Embassy of Singapore and private collectors from Singapore to New York.
