A bird needs to fly and a fish needs to swim, and as an artist, I need to create. To have this gift of time to be able to create paintings gives me such an immense feeling of gratitude.
I love to layer my paintings, activating the canvas with bold and intricate brushstrokes and weaving poetic words, hopes and dreams into the painting. It’s like a rhythmic dance of the creative mind at play.
This beautiful layering process is intuitive, complex and bold and then nearly all covered. The unknown journey of the painting is never revealed, but the finished painting tells the story. As Carl Jung stated, “Only the dreamer knows the dream.” As I say, “Only the artist knows the creative journey of the painting.”
I lived on the land as a child and returned to the land to raise my family. I am deeply connected to nature. I am so inspired by the sunrise over my paddock greeting the day.
I am inspired by the intricate spider webs glistening with morning dew, the gentle flow of the water along our creek, the trees creating an amazing ecosystem, and the colour of the changing seasons. Above all, I am moved by the moon and the stars that light up the night sky. I feel that when I am with nature, I am never alone.
My current landscape series is dedicated to my land; it’s a reflection of my place on this earth. I try to capture the energy of the river down at the bottom of the hill, the strength of trees growing tall and strong (we planted all our trees by hand), the stunning view of the land and the vastness over the horizon.
I love colour. Colour is the first thing I see. Colour is the first thing I feel. Colour takes my imagination on a happy dance. I love to work with both acrylics and oils. Acrylics for me impart a sense of urgency with the shortened drying time, a sense of forgiveness with layering and so many other possibilities.
With oils, I tend to be compulsive, then reflective, as the layers progress. I have a clear intention of the outcome, but let intuition and trust be my guide.
To have connections and community around me is vital. As an artist I have a lot of solitary time in the studio. I need that time to grow, explore and develop my work. I also love to connect, to talk, to share and to be surrounded by people that inspire me. To have that balance is so important to me—its good for the soul.
To compliment my art business, I also run art workshops and Warrior Women with Heart and Soul courses. I love the fearless creative side of children and the delight of adults getting back in touch with their fun, playful side. I feel we are all born artists.
Some of us have a burning desire to develop our creative side, face our fears and meet our inner critic, grabbing them both by the hand and daring to keep exploring a journey into the unknown.
