I was born in Ponce, Puerto Rico, in 1958. Currently I am living and working between San Juan, Miami and Los Angeles.
My work is inspired by nostalgia and Caribbean iconography. I like to reinterpret the past and look at it with fresh eyes.
Culture is an evolving and constant change agent. I like to make references to the past and see how they relate to the present, and how the past sometimes repeats itself.
Since I was a kid, I have been fascinated with magazine images.
I like to take these images and reinterpret them in ways that make them interrelate with art history, and act as cultural references.
I love bold colors, and I utilize different materials to complement the image collages I create in my head.
I mostly work in mixed media on canvas. These resemble the lithography and silkscreen techniques of the contemporary pop art movement.
My work is influenced by Warhol, Koons, Hirst and Murakami.
These are great Carlos. I love old imagery like this and your treatment brings it right up to date and without losing nostalgia. Fantastic!
