Drawing and painting have always been a passion of mine. As a child, I would sit for hours drawing, painting and trying new techniques.
I decided to follow my thirst for art and studied at Columbia College in Chicago. I received my BFA with honors in 1993. I was then able to have a career as an illustrator and graphic designer. However, my true passion and self-expression comes from being a painter.
There is something about a blank canvas that excites me. Maybe it’s because it’s an opportunity to experiment with spontaneity and chance. I love to paint people, particularly the face.
I find faces really interesting. I like to focus on the eyes and make them the focal point of my paintings.
I am known for painting iconic figures, but I have been experimenting with painting models as well. I feel I can have more of a creative spontaneity with a model rather than worrying about trying to capture the likeness of an iconic figure.
I would describe my work as expressive and impressionistic. I use bold colors and broad spontaneous marks to create excitement and add enthusiasm to the painting. I do this by using large brushes, trowels, pallet knives or whatever I can find to give me the texture or feeling I’m looking for.
I enjoy the challenge of trying to capture a subject’s likeness while intensifying his or her beauty through the use of bold and vibrant colors. I do not follow any rules or theories. I just paint.
The love of art has been instilled in my heart. Every time I step away it always calls me back. It’s a huge part of me and how I look at things. So, I continue on the wonderful journey of evolving and exploring my passion for the arts.
