I am a self-taught artist. I was in my mid-thirties when the urge to create became more powerful than my fear of failure. Oil painting quickly became my passion and a part of my spirit.
Although I am an introvert and putting myself “out there” is a real stretch for me, I paint because I have something to say—about life, about love, about loss. I am inspired by poetry, song lyrics, things people say, dreams and experiences.
My work is figurative. The figures are often portraits of quirky, strong, feisty women. Most of my pieces include some form of whimsy or mischief. Others are more serious and provide a personal outlet for life’s ups and downs.
I am currently working on a series that challenges female gender stereotypes called “That’s Not Ladylike.”
I begin my process with a sketch directly on the canvas and then apply paint and cold wax with brushes, palette knife, and my fingers.
The decisions I make are primarily intuitive. I call myself a “trial and error” painter as I don’t have any formal art training. I consider a painting finished when it looks and feels right.
If for some reason I am dissatisfied with a painting, I will cut out (literally, with scissors) the parts of the painting that I think are worth saving and stitch them onto a different canvas to create a new piece. Often, these end up being my favorite paintings.
I have exhibited my work in several Colorado galleries. My paintings can be found in homes around the world. I’ve illustrated two children’s books, four music CD covers, the cover of a book of love poems and a page in a student textbook.
There is nothing else I’d rather be doing than making art. On any given day, at any given time, I can be found sitting at my easel, listening to music while joyfully losing myself in the process.
My art studio is in my Colorado home where I reside with my husband. Painting has taken me on an unexpected journey of self-discovery and to places I can go only in my imagination. I am humbled that others connect with my work and are willing to join me on this adventure.
