Ever since I can remember I have been an artist. Some say that I was born with the “soul of the artist” but it wasn’t until later in life that I could consciously say it is true. It came naturally to me as a child to create little things with flowers or to dream of the birds singing as I stood upon a stonewall overlooking the Mystic River pretending to fly. My imagination was limitless, but so was my intelligence.
Often the art classes I took were at the back of the school and placed emphasis on the three “R’s” which I equally loved. I danced to the Fred Astaire movies while I vacuumed. I lived in suburban American homes out of “Pleasantville” and dreamt of the time I would be discovered in a soda fountain by a film director. The dreams were many and eventually became a quest for beauty.
As I entered adulthood, my dreams led me into the world of the rock band Pink Floyd. Their music touched my very being and further inspired my dream—the quest for beauty and that one can live it!
As it happened, I fell in love with David Gilmour, their lead guitarist. Our first moments were a girl’s dream come true. We married on the 7th of July, 1975, and over the next ten years gave birth to our four children—Alice, Clare, Sara and Matthew.
During this time, my life expanded to include the development of my own innate artistic qualities. I studied for eight years with the English visionary artist Cecil Collins. He inspired me to touch the essence of life and then allow one’s own uniqueness to create the form or drawing that would capture its treasured quality.
My life up until the early nineties had given me the opportunity to live amongst “Beauty-now.” I saw that it was my quest to create “Beauty-to BE Beauty!” I painted long hours with a wish for this to become.
I was discovering that to manifest beauty one had to acknowledge the visible and invisible aspects of life. I was being led to create artwork which sought to express the natural awareness of the divine “Beauty and Wonder of Life” in all relationships and on all dimensions of our being.
I have come to understand that this quality and experience is best captured by creating a metaphysical story of the interaction between the viewer, the artist and the artwork. It’s a story which speaks directly to our archetypal longing for happiness, beauty and the truth—a story which offers a doorway to the self beyond the collective story that blinds us from knowing the beauty that we are.
My life’s quest is to create artwork and an atmosphere through my art that ignite the “Wonder of the Child through Beauty.” Our eyes can see the miracle of the sparkle of the raindrop and together we shall hear the song of the angels once again. In beauty we are united!
