I have loved art since my childhood and started drawing at the age of three, but my life journey took me toward medicine. I returned to art in later life.
My formal training was through a three-year program at The Compass Atelier.
I am currently a portrait painter and a hematologist and oncologist. My subjects are my patients, some of whom have been with me for over twenty years.
Many of my patients have been through very difficult times and have displayed great strength and dignity. Through their portraits I want to honor their personality traits, spirit and strength. The title of each portrait reflects those individual characteristics.
In “Serenity,” the subject sings and plays the piano for her church as well as leads worship. The woman in “Resilience” has been a fighter for her health for nearly twenty-six years and takes care of her grandson.
“Power” features a woman who runs marathons and “Subtle Strength” says it all. A woman who has battled cancer for over twenty years is the subject of my portrait “Perseverance.” In “Confidence,” the subject’s demeanor is clear by the painting.
A veteran that proudly served our country is featured in “Patriotism.” The woman in “Commitment” is studying very hard to become a nurse. The woman in “Poetry” is a poet/writer and in “Fierce” the subject is smart, beautiful, athletic and is on the National Honor Society.
For the portraits, I took photos in my office or in an environment they preferred. We chose their favorite outfit since the portrait is permanent. I typically snap 60-100 photos in rapid sequence to find an expression that is not too posed and also reflects a trait of their personality.
During the painting process I try to capture their likeness in a photorealistic manner. I take my time—I am never rushed—I want my portraits to reflect my love and respect for the people with whom I share a very important journey.
