Artist Gail Golden found her voice and passion in the art of jewelry-making. Learn more by visiting her website.
I had a very active upbringing in Idaho and Montana, and now live in New Mexico. I loved exploring the outdoors, and collecting and polishing rocks and minerals.
In college, as a fine arts major, I explored so many different mediums. I tried my hand working for a while as an illustrator and photographer, but wanted to express myself in 3D. When I finally discovered jewelry-making I was thrilled to begin collecting “rocks” again in the form of precious gems.
Jewelry making is so hands-on; I get to play with fire, metal, and beautiful glittery gemstones! I am constantly looking for interesting ways to combine texture and color.
The best part about making jewelry though, is the connection I make with my customers through my work. I have found that jewelry has a deep meaning to people. Many of us convey our essence through our adornments.
I especially enjoy working with my client’s heirloom gemstones to create something completely personal and contemporary.
Like many artists, I learned how to support myself with my work after I began making jewelry. I was working full time outside the art realm and making jewelry in my spare time.
In the beginning I developed a style that was consistent throughout my pieces. Then I began consulting with a nonprofit business development group that gave me the tools I needed to support myself through my art.
I have not had to sacrifice creativity to meet my goals; I feel good business management and making art are two sides of the same coin.
Living in the art town of Taos for the past thirty-two years has been an important source of inspiration.
I share my studio with my husband who is also a jeweler. Our styles are so different but we toss ideas around and act as each other’s adviser.
