I’m a mixed media artist. My work is figurative and moves between reality and fantasy. It is also influenced by the Retro art movement; showing nostalgia with a dose of cynicism and detachment.
I come from Medellin, Colombia. I grew up in the times of the cartels when violence rampaged all over the country and reflected in families and society. For me, art was an escape. In spite of all the chaos, I was able to evolve and face my fears and obstacles to appreciate the beauty of my people. We can all relate to physical, emotional or psychological pain; but, most important to me, is the resilience of the human spirit.
Growing up surrounded by a loving community of women gave me a different perspective on the notion of family. Because of this, a great deal of respect and admiration for women is always reflected in my work.
When I migrated to the United States, I felt the need to be a good ambassador for my culture. I came from the land of the eternal spring and I carried the colors of its flowers on my palette.
For me, becoming an artist was something very organic. From a very young age, I developed a fascination for the human form, superheroes, and Greek mythology. I was always a dreamer.
I couldn’t afford a formal education in arts, so in my adolescent years I took art workshops where I learned about painting materials and techniques. Also, on a more personal level of interest, I studied anatomy and the proportions of the human figure.
I didn’t think I would have a career in art, but in a very subconscious way, I never stop pursuing my dream. Fortunately, my innate talent overpowered the emotional and economic adversities.
At the same time, my message and voice have been developing little by little when I choose subjects such as cultural diversity, gender equality, migration and the empowerment of women. It’s hard not to be influenced by reality and this moment in history that I live in.
By creating art, I am making a statement that I hope provides a different perspective on the subjects I portray and that on the whole, make this a better world. I always do this with a deep sense of respect and admiration for the characters that I portray.
My journey up until now has taken me to different countries and cultures. My observations make me believe that art can break cultural and personal barriers, and bring us closer together as humans.
We may be diverse at the bottom and equal at the top, but with technology such as social media that is available now, it makes it easier than ever before to balance the differences.
