I grew up in Brooklyn, New York, in a Puerto Rican family. I fell in love with making art at the age of sixteen. I tried selling my art in the West Village. I ended up selling one of my drawings for five dollars. It made my day.
I then turned to photography. I fell in love with the medium and began working for the New York Post, taking photos of celebrities. Because of this, I was considered part of the paparazzi.
After that, I got a steady job at a night club on the East side as the house photographer. I worked at the club for a couple of years and was paid forty dollars a night. From there, I worked on movie sets as the stills photographer.
My life changed when I got another steady job as a house photographer for a new rock n’ roll night club called The China Club.
Here is where I met many celebrities like David Bowie, Julian Lennon, and Rod Stewart, who became close friends. These relationships inspired me to start creating pop art, which is now my passion.
I create my pop art by taking a photo, adding digital effects to it and then transferring the image onto fabric, canvas or glass with Mod Podge.
Sometimes the outcome will look grungy and ripped, which gives an original feel to it.
I love to work with acrylic paints and markers to help bring out the subject matter. I also do 3D art on canvas and fabric with resin.
The majority of my work is selected from whatever makes me happiest. What happens in my studio makes everything happen and I stay focused on that.
I don’t have one style. I love to explore different styles. Sometimes I paint too carefully and then realize I can be a little sloppy instead of being so neat. Even when I feel I’m finished with a piece, I end up looking at it for days and I often end up adding something else to it.
I get the best feeling when I get a response from a client saying they love the artwork and have it hanging in their house. I love making people happy when they purchase my art. Sometimes when I work on a piece for weeks and then sell it, I feel sad saying goodbye to it!
