I have known since I was very young that I was an artist.
Even within my family, I was known as the artistic one. By the time I graduated high school, I was encouraged to get a “real job” so art was always something I was going to do “some day.”
Once my kids were grown, I was encouraged by my family to paint. It was something that had been calling to me my whole life, but I always thought that to be a real artist I had to go to school.
Years ago, I met a local artist at a party. He told me that if I wanted to be an artist, I just needed to do it. I enrolled in a local beginner’s painting class to learn about the materials. After that class, and after many art books and magazines, I started painting whatever I could.
Eventually, I took a week-long abstract painting workshop that really helped me find my “painting voice.” That was about eight years ago. Since then, I have worked hard developing my art. I finally decided to quit my day job to devote myself full time to art.
One of the first comments people make about my work is my use of color. As they study my paintings, they are drawn by their energy. I love painting abstractly. To me, abstract painting is all about pure energy and emotions that end up on the canvas.
I am working on two main series of paintings. One is my Cosmos Series, which resembles space, but to me it’s the deeper meaning of the universe.
The other is my Ruins Series, which tells stories. I work with very watered-down acrylic paint, which makes the paint do its own thing. Painting this way is a good lesson in giving up control.
I always tell people that I don’t know if my personal growth helps me create art, or if my art helps me with my personal growth. I find that my painting process is meditative in a way, and the creative process resembles life and the challenges we come across.
I hope my work challenges people to feel or look at things a bit differently. I also love to share my creative process, because it has helped me grow so much as a person. Besides sharing my paintings, I also teach workshops, which I hope spark the creative process in every part of people’s lives, not just in painting.
