Artist Rosana Azar shares an uplifting, dreamlike portfolio of art she describes as magical realism. Visit her website to view more of her work.
My name is Rosana Azar. I was born in Argentina and immigrated to Washington, DC with my husband and two young children over thirty years ago in hopes of finding more opportunities for ourselves and our children.
As a child, I bristled at the rigidity of school and sought other ways to learn and create outside of it. I studied drawing, painting and sculpture with renowned artists in Argentina, developing my own style of surrealism. My style is often described as Magical Realism—a mix of fantasy and a dreamlike state.
I have been fortunate to have my art on display all over the world. It is displayed in galleries, museums, and embassies in the United States. Abroad, my art has been seen in Paris, Berlin, Prague, Lisbon and Buenos Aires.
Currently I am elated to show new paintings at the exhibition titled Into the Light at the Women’s National Democratic Club in Washington, DC, from November 21st through February 12th, 2020.
To me, art is a process of personal searching, both in terms of how I understand myself and how I feel about the world.
When I begin a new piece, I never start with a specific goal in mind or a blank canvas. A blank canvas is too white and stark. Rather, I doodle on a sheet of paper or build a canvas up with modeling paste so I can explore shapes and textures.
This propels my creative process, ultimately becoming a dialogue between the canvas and my unconscious thoughts. Throughout this process I open myself to the exploration and conversation, listening to what the canvas is telling me.
Surrendering to the creative process allows me to connect with my inner self without rationalizing or critiquing my work. Upon reflection, my pieces represent issues that I am grappling with such as faith, family, community and environment. The messages within my artwork come forward intuitively.
As an artist, the single theme I most often communicate through my work is hope. With careful attention to lines, shapes and vibrant colors, I create dreamlike worlds that are both positive and powerful.
I have been told that my pieces are similar to my disposition in life—seeing the good in the world and loving what life has to offer. My personal goal is to share this light. I hope the people who see my work feel its meaning and are uplifted by it.
