I grew up by the ocean as part of a family of Italian immigrants who were musically and artistically creative. At the age of seven, they encouraged me in my desires to study music and art.
During my childhood I not only lived close by the ocean, but there was also a small forest on a large plot of land next to my home. I became enthralled with the magical beauty I found in “my woods” and I have often returned to this theme.
I am an oil painter who thrives on creating work that is not only uplifting, but at the same time expresses and shares a deeper, more universal meaning. I love the creative process, the growth and changes that reflect my personal experiences, and the inspiration that I feel from something simple and small that we tend to miss.
I am also inspired by the beauty of the landscape in its varied forms that become an expression of my present moment.
The work presented here is my most recent. My inspiration for this series began at the end of one of my many walks in the woods. A wind storm came seemingly out of nowhere. The sky began to darken, and the wind quickly picked up. This stopped me in my tracks. I couldn’t move, and felt I was meant to watch. In two minutes, the sounds, sights, smells and sense of tasting the earth surrounded me.
I had the sudden thought that something big was about to happen—what, I didn’t know. Was it personal? Was my life about to change? Or was it more than that? Once home, I couldn’t stop thinking about this experience.
Three months later, my husband became ill and was diagnosed with multiple myeloma. My experience in the woods returned repeatedly and I began painting this experience. The answers I had been seeking came to me. Yes, it was personal and here was the big change I had intuited. Then, COVID-19 appeared and changed our world. It gives me chills to think about the questions I had. Was this experience in the woods more than personal?
I feel these images reflect strong work that I want shared and experienced. The series will be shown, virus dependent, for the first time in an exhibition in 2021 in Boston and titled “Out of Nowhere.”
In such times of uncertainty, I’m deeply grateful to have been chosen to feature this work online with Artsy Shark. Many of the titles are in Italian, and relate to musical terms. I still play music and enjoy it; however, painting is what I have done all my life, and with grace I’ve had valuable educational training.
Painting is natural to me for its freedom from performance. My shy childlike self emerges when I play music in public, but there is no need for it in my studio practice. I was captivated by art and encouraged in childhood. I feel blessed to have this ability and to use it in hopes that the work resonates with my viewers.
