“The Complexity of Joy” acrylic on three-dimensional stretched canvas, dimensions variable, as shown: 69” x 48” x 6”

My three-dimensional artworks cannot be classified as belonging to a singular genre. Sculptural, painting and installation practices are interconnected, becoming hybrid creations that initially found their forms through architectural studies.

Select concepts and idealisms prevail regarding diversity, visual kinetics and identity while questioning their object pairings. I work to create visuals that are not defined, but instigate open-ended conversations about the form, communication, beauty and especially joy.

I refer to these works as Dimensional Paintings.

I have also become interested in developing a type of abstract but communicable visual language that utilizes form and color that speaks as a narrative. These biomorphic forms, in many cases, cross the lines between figurative and abstract, often projecting character-like qualities.

“Speak Your Mind” acrylic on three-dimensional stretched canvas, dimensions variable, as shown: 24” x 32” x 4.5”

I don’t choose color and form based on my personal aesthetic, but rather as a signal—a way to communicate to my audience. Their diverse experiences and varied responses help to channel my decisions away from my personal aesthetic to that which communicates more universally. I believe accessing a collective consciousness is the key to finding a greater understanding of signaling, whether it be emotional, cultural, psychological, mythological, historical or based on modern color science.

“Collective Conversations” acrylic on with marine epoxy resin treated stretched canvas with bi-component clear-coat, dimensions variable, as shown: 48” x 36” x 9”

Throughout my career I have produced two and three-dimensional paintings, stand-alone sculptures, wall, floor and environmental installations, large commissioned works, screen prints, digital prints, film set designs, sound and video works. The mediums that are best for describing the project guides the outcome of what I produce.

“The Hunger, Keep Your Eye On The Prize” acrylic with marine epoxy resin treated stretched canvas with aviation grade clear-coat, dimensions variable, as shown: 33” x 53” x 24”

I initially do research while producing hand sketches and or computer generated refined digital examples. The successful products of this research often become prints or are developed into larger two or three-dimensional works. At times, an idea evolves into an environmental installation.

Before I begin production, I meditate to clear my mind of earlier, preconceived geometric influences in my efforts to create unimagined forms that are indicative of the irregularity found in life. I then intuitively create hand sketches. I refer to this process as Unconscious Geometry.

“The Dreamer” hand-pulled embossed serigraph monoprint on Arches Platine 310 grm. paper, 30″ x 22.5”

Once I have refined my hand sketches, I build my canvas-covered armatures or embossing pieces, which I then photograph. I process these photographs through Photoshop. This allows me to create additional studies for color choices and graphic placements.
