My favorite thing about making art is when I’m creating from my inner spirit. The result is art that my viewers have referred to as calming and mysterious.
Before I begin a painting, I often pray to Jesus Christ to help my inner spirit create a visual message; then I simply make marks and create layers out of my intuitive response to what is already inside me.
The work becomes a conversation, much like characters in a play responding to each other.
Ultimately, when a painting is nearing completion, I begin to notice what is working and what is not working as far as elements of quality art.
At that point the true message begins to appear as I find solutions to the areas that might be improved with revision.
I enjoy a certain amount of order and in spite of the predictability of my process, the outcome is absolutely unpredictable. I find that very exciting.
When I finish a painting, I feel as though I’ve awakened after being asleep to the world. I say, “When I awoke, this is what was there!” Inside that bubble of marking and painting, I feel conscious only of what is happening before me.
It reminds me of playing music and being lost in the sounds, yet aware of the notes and elements of the music. It’s as if time stands still while immersed in the action.
That is how I experience my art-making. While it is without thinking, it is not without thought and awareness. When we breathe it is without thinking, but not without awareness of whether our breathing is as it should be at any given moment. It’s a constant intuitive ebb and flow.
This is how my art is made.
