“In Harmony – Daybreak” mixed media, 13″ x 19″ x 2″
I have been involved in a number of different jobs and hobbies throughout my life, but it is the act of making art that rings truest for me and sets my spirit free.

I pursued fine arts throughout my higher education and received a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree from Boston University School for the Arts in Boston, Massachusetts, and a Master of Fine Arts Degree from Cranbrook Academy of Art in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan.

“Midday” mixed media, 13″ x 17″ x .25″D
When life took some unexpected turns, I found myself in the business world as a public relations professional for several years. I began to make art again in 2018, and have exhibited my work in several national, local and online galleries. I call myself a “re-emerging” artist!

“Somewhere Between #2” mixed media, 16″ x 16″ x .75″
I am intrigued by three-dimensional spaces. Working in mixed media, I create bas relief pieces, building and lifting certain elements to emphasize the spatial dynamics of the composition and the elements of space, light, shape and form.

In my pieces, I create an “almost-but-not-quite real” space that juxtaposes forms and shapes, highlighting their points of contact and the shadows they cast.

My intention is to demonstrate how these elements relate to each other and their surroundings and to capture a scene that stirs the senses.

Artist Deborah Perlman’s creative process
I started these collages by making numerous sketches of spaces, inspired by architectural and nature photos, as well as my inner voice. The pieces pushed my exploration of space into a new realm, hopefully creating a “wait…. is that…. or is it….?” moment for the viewer, as it does for me!

“Somewhere Between” mixed media, 18″ x 24″ x 1.5″
These mysterious spaces contain shapes, forms and spaces that jump off the page and invite the viewer to enter an “other” world.

I have included detail photos of some of these pieces, to illustrate their 3-D quality, as well as a step-by-step illustration of the process. The works are made with different types of paper, most of which are glued to a firm backing to create the desired form and shape that will project out a few inches from the background.

Whether the scene is real or imagined, my goal is to create a dynamic, provocative composition that celebrates planes, forms, shapes and spaces and challenges the viewer’s perceptions and expectations.
