Shifting geometric shapes and brilliantly changing facets inspired artist Cliff Kearns’ Immortal Diamond Series. Visit his website to see more.
My recent series of paintings center around diamonds. One of the oldest and hardest substances on the planet, the diamond has been fashioned into some of the most beautiful objects on earth.
The carefully polished facets can appear to change in appearance and relationship with the slightest movement, not unlike an individual’s character and mood. In a symbolic sense, I liken my paintings of the diamond’s beautiful shifting geometric shapes to people, personality traits and even to relationships with others.
When examined closely, the relationship and pattern seems random and chaotic, but when viewed from a distance, it makes more sense. The picture becomes clearer.
I’ve been inspired to create this series by the spiritual writings of Richard Rohr, a Franciscan priest who, in his book entitled Immortal Diamond, likens the special gem to the “true self” buried deep within us.
These mixed media artworks begin as digital creations which are then embellished and finished in acrylic paint on canvas. I utilize iridescent and interference colours that become somewhat alive when viewed from different angles.
My intent is to explore and uncover different views of the diamond. The character, complexity and beauty of each original painting become metaphors for the “soul of the individual.”
I have been drawing, painting and making art since early childhood. An astute high school guidance counsellor introduced me to the Special Art Program at H.B Beal. After graduating, I honed my technical skills in the art departments of three major corporations before embarking on a self-employed freelance career as an illustrator and commissioned artist.
Over the next thirty years, I made a living and raised a family solely through my art.
A transition to personal self-expression and a unique view on art and life came around 2005 after a successful and formidable career as an artist for hire. I’ve created a number of series since then which began with an overarching theme of incorporating sequential numbering into the artworks.
Quite obvious in most of the first two hundred paintings and constructions, the numbers are still integrated; however, they are less obvious in this Immortal Diamond Series. This practice becomes an interesting marker in tracking my evolution as an artist.

They are all magnificent works of art. You are an amazing artist and a very talented. I’ve never seen original paintings like this before, I would be proud to have one, or many hanging in my home.
I love your diamond kaleidoscope.
Thanks Donald and Maria!
I love your different reflections of color in your diamond shapes. I always enjoyed looking thru kaleidoscope refractions.
