I am mostly a self-taught artist who didn’t start painting until late in life—when I turned 58, to be exact.
The circumstance that led me to paint was due to a self-awakening I owe to my beloved grandmother who passed away many years ago. She was a gifted oil painter; I had the honor of being exposed to her amazing talent and beautiful works of art throughout her lifetime.
Ten years ago, I came upon a number of my grandmother’s paintings that were put in storage after my parents died. When I held up one that I had particularly loved when I was young, I distinctly heard my grandmother’s voice say to me, “Paint the beauty you see.”
This was a deeply spiritual turning point in my life.
My job in a Silicon Valley firm had become dry and devoid of any creativity. Up to that point, I had never even considered oil painting. However, after this epiphany, it became the creative outlet that I my heart longed for.
So, I started oil painting. It was a blessing in so many ways.
After 17 years, I was abruptly laid off of my job. Although it had become meaningless, it was still a huge loss. My life totally changed overnight.
I painted my way through my fears, my depression and my grief. Creating filled me with such meaning and connection! It connected me—or should I say re-connected me—with my deeply buried creative self and gave me a means in which I could share the beauty I see with others. This is what my heart longed for.
Since then, it’s been a lot of trial and error. Well…mostly error.
I’ve stumbled my way into developing what I think is a unique style of painting using large brushes, bright colors and bold, angled strokes.
Painting on top of a bright red or purple or black background, I purposely allow areas of the underpainting to show to highlight the elements in the scene. In other words, places of the painting that I do not paint reveal rich and dynamic background colors that create a vibration and make the scene come alive.
Oil painting has become my passion—my spiritual passion—to paint the beauty I see in the world, to paint from my heart, to paint in honor of my grandmother and to connect with others through my work.
When I paint, I do not feel that I paint the painting. I feel that the painting paints through me.
