Art and fashion have been in my life in as far back as I can remember.
When I wasn’t making clothing for my dolls, I was drawing. In middle school I was taken by my teacher to classes at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston on the weekends. This was exciting for me as a child from a large immigrant family. I was able to leave my neighborhood and travel to different parts of the city to see art in an incredible building.
Viewing art became a way to see the world in a different way, through the eyes of others and through history.
This new way of seeing set me on a road to a continual exploration of art—its artists, mediums and techniques—that continues to this day. I always feel a sense of adventure when I set out to learn a new technique or discover an artist I have never heard of. I never tire of the possibilities.
I started painting with oils in the 1980’s during a summer stay in the south of France. When I came back to the states, I continued experimenting in all forms of art while working in the fashion industry in New York City. This was during height of the 80’s New York art scene.
I found a connection between the glamour of fashion and the glamour seen at the art openings. There was a daily adventure waiting to be discovered every time I left my apartment.
In 1991, after 14 years of big city living, I had the opportunity to relocate to California for work. After starting a family, my interest in art surfaced again. I began by taking printmaking, then traditional oil painting classes. This was great training for understanding composition and the craft of painting.
I have been deeply entrenched in the world of abstract painting for the last decade. Once I began using acrylic paint as my medium of choice for abstract work, I threw myself into learning as much as I could about the medium.
I love experimenting with new products and I truly enjoy opportunities that challenge me to react to the painting surface in new ways. I seek to create abstract narrative works that are atmospheric, mysterious and that evoke fragility and resilience.
Through my works I can trace my growth as an artist and as a human being. I realize that for me creating art is far more about self-discovery than it is about painting what I see or feel.
The mediums that I currently work with are acrylic, oil, oil and cold wax and graphite. The continued learning and the momentum I experienced in the fashion industry is still a big part of my journey. I look forward to the excitement of sharing my work with more eyes in the hope of finding connections to those who appreciate what I have to say.
