My story starts as a young child when we immigrated to Canada from the UK. On my way to school each day, I would pass the neighbourhood milk wagon, pulled by a dappled grey mare named Babe. Each day I would give her a treat. She looked forward to this, maybe too much. The milkman would often complain that Babe would refuse to move from her delivery spot until I had arrived and given her the morning treat!

 

 

That was the beginning of my love of horses. Over the years, I had several horses of my own which I enjoyed riding and showing.

 

 

I eventually gave up riding when I retired. Taking my love for horses in a different direction, I began painting them. In my paintings, I try to relay to the viewer all the joy I feel when I’m close to them.

 

 

I love using my brushes to move over the canvas. It reminds me of what it felt like to stroke and groom my horses, helping to bring them to life for me.

 

 

Horses are not my only love. I adore all of nature’s animals—particularly cats, dogs and all wildlife. I also paint my second love, wildlife and domestic animals, that have captured my interest.

 

 

Over the years, I have painted in various mediums, beginning with pastels, then graphite and watercolour and on to my final medium—oils. I find that oils create a vibrancy in my paintings. Intense colour can be achieved by using them. This brings my animals to life, especially in the photorealistic style that I use.

 

 

In April 2015, I was selected to paint one of 27 fibreglass horses displayed by Headwaters Tourism—the Ontario, Canada, marketing organization representing Dufferin County and the Towns of Caledon, Erin, Mono and Shelburne in the Province of Ontario. These horses were created in celebration of the Toronto 2015 Pan Am Games. This was an exciting moment for me, and truly an honour to be selected.

 

 

In October 2017, I could not have been more excited and honoured that my artwork “Shadows” was selected out of 2,000 pieces to be showcased at Art Design Consultants for their annual art competition and exhibit Art Comes Alive. I hope you enjoy my paintings.
