“Broken Bonnet” oil on canvas, 36″ x 48″

Nature, since time immemorial, has been a place of healing and refuge. This has always been true for me. Yet there was a long period of time, while living in major cities, when I rarely had a chance to get out into nature and recharge. I began to paint the peace and strength I found in nature and it helped me to heal. This is what I strive to communicate to the viewer.

“Aqua Verde” oil on canvas, 60″ x 20″

The deep connection I have with nature and the willingness to pour my heart and soul into my work is communicated clearly. I find this to be fascinating and very rewarding!

“Through the Trees” oil on canvas, 48″ x 36″

Long before I began to speak about my work, people would tell me how calming and serene my art is. I remember a woman walking into my artist booth at a show in Atlanta and saying that it was like walking into a cathedral! What a thrill that was for me. I have continued to paint in this manner ever since. The process continues to bring me peace and healing.

“Island Pool” oil on canvas, 45″ x 30″

My stylized depictions of seashells, water surfaces and coastal areas from the rocky shores of the Great Lakes to the gorgeous Gulf Coast, are all reflections of my inner life. Meditation, spiritual study and prayer are a large part of who I am.

These practices have helped me grow in wisdom and inner strength. Should we be lucky enough to reach middle age, we’ll be beat up by life. It’s inevitable. Yet how do we find our equilibrium again? My art is meant to encourage and inspire. By painting strong, peaceful imagery, I’m asking the viewer to find these qualities within themselves.

Additionally, I strive to help people see the beauty that is often right in front of them that they fail to see. The spaces between the branches of trees, the fascinating reflections on the surface of water, the colors in the sky. There is so much beauty everywhere if only we would slow down enough to truly see!

“She Sings” oil on canvas, 16″ x 40″

My broken seashells are operating metaphors for middle age and beyond. Though life will challenge us, cripple us, beat us up and bring us sorrow, there still exists within our souls an ever-present stillness. Like the inner whorl of a univalve shell, which remains intact long after the outer shell has been beaten by the waves and faded by the sun, so too does our essence remain intact, beautifully reflecting God’s glory. If only we would quiet our minds and allow it to shine!

“Fleeting Beauty” oil on canvas, 18″ x 36″

I paint what I see and what I wish to be. The journey has been long and often very challenging. Yet the love I have shared, the beauty that surrounds me, and the magic that is everywhere restores my soul and brings me joy.

Bringing this inner strength and healing into my paintings, with the intention that it is communicated successfully, is a gift I continue to explore. My wish is that my imagery will bring some beauty and serenity into your life and help you keep the light of love shining brightly within you.

  1. Your work is lovely and inspiring. Your use of color and form is wonderful.

    • Thank you so much Mary, for such nice compliment. Color and Form do take precedent over reality in my work! It is particularly fulfilling to have someone say my art is inspiring! That is a primary goal! Have a wonderful week! Margaret
