I feel a deep, broad connection to the beauty and power of nature. I work to convey that in my artwork, suggesting a narrative for the viewer to complete.

 

 

Prior to founding the Oxide Studio in 2010, I worked at a variety of corporations as a graphic designer. The crash of 2008 caused me to be downsized.  This in turn handed me an opportunity to redesign my future. Picking up a variety of skills in metalworking and welding at the company where I had been working, I decided it was now or never. I took the plunge into my art studio.

 

 

Graphic representations of Arizona’s unique plant life were the inspiration for my botanical themed panels. They were the first pieces created at The Oxide Studio. I “frame” each of my sculptures within the confines of a rectangle, something that was influenced by my photographic background.

 

 

This produces a contemporary and somewhat formal presentation. It contrasts with not only the colors, but the organic forms in the environment of my design.

 

 

When creating work for galleries/art exhibits, there is a departure from my botanically-themed panels. Instead, the pieces are fueled by my interest in astronomy, the sun’s prominence—especially here in Arizona—and the relationships between objects in space.

 

 

My desire was to be more geometric with a minor planetary influence. The presence of positive and negative space affects how they relate to one another.

 

 

I was introduced to public art in 2015 with an award utilizing my botanical panels on a larger scale on the side of a building in Tempe, Arizona. Since then, my awards/pieces can be viewed in Phoenix, Scottsdale, Tempe, Chino Valley and Tucson in Arizona, as well as Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, Augusta, Georgia and soon in the City of Henderson, Nevada and Mesa, Arizona.

 

 

I believe a good public art story considers all the significant elements and weaves them together into artistic form. Public art creates a more humane environment, one of distinction, enjoyment, and pride for all citizens. I believe that the artwork belongs to the community where it resides. My pieces reflect a desire to combine iconic design with a medium that reflects a sense of timelessness and permanence while expressing the visions of the project.

 

 

As an Arizona-based metal artist skilled in a variety of materials with a wealth of experience producing artworks for private and public spaces, my industrious work ethic and urban design sense enable me to create distinctive works of art that foster new and dynamic relationships between community, site, history and the natural environment.

 

 

My work blurs the line between fine art, public sculpture, and collaborative practices. It engages diverse audiences, humanizes public spaces, and often encourages participation with larger-than-life-sized artwork.
