I am cartographer by trade, which in its own way is artistic. Taking my skills from hand drafting, I ventured into creating art. I like to say “cartographer by day and an artist by night”.
Pigmented art markers are an unusual choice for a medium, but with my cartography background, they were just the right fit along with the pens.
Folk and aboriginal art from around the world has influenced my style. As a self-taught artist, I feel a great sense of freedom to express my art in whatever way feels natural.
You could describe my work as whimsical modern folk art. My work is from my imagination using my surroundings as inspiration.
Growing up in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains gave me the opportunity to explore the natural world and all the wonders it holds. Nature has always evoked deep emotions in my soul. My whole life I have felt connected to the animals, insects, birds, reptiles, the rivers and forests.
Hearing owls calling to each other at night or the peaceful coo of a mourning dove can bring me to tears. There is something extraordinary about the night sky filled with stars or a brilliant sunset. Taking the emotion I feel when embraced by nature, I try to express this in my artwork.
Due to my technical drafting background, I like to create patterns using circles and straight lines. Bright and colorful artwork has always drawn my eye, and I strive to create colorful pieces as well.
One of my favorite pastimes is buying artwork. I have a house filled with beautiful art, with many walls containing numerous pieces. We like to call these walls our happy walls. My hope is that my art brings someone the same happiness I feel when viewing my collected art.
A gentleman from Germany recently purchased a piece of my art. He shared that his wife was from South Africa and the piece they purchased reminded of her of home. Hearing this made my heart sing to know something I created brought someone comfort.
Creating art is such a personal and emotional experience, each piece telling a story. As an artist, my goal is to create colorful whimsical artwork based in nature that brings just a little happiness to the world.

These are so unique. Maybe they could be illustrations for childrens books.
Thank you so much for your kind words on my artwork.
I am so moved by the artist Pam Schiermeyer. Her life’s story is so evident in her artwork. I could feel a mother’s love in A Helping Nudge drawing. Simplicity and movement as the whale helped her calf stay safe.
Thank you so much, I appreciate your comments.
