As far back as I can remember, I have been fascinated by the landscape. I savored the peace I felt among nature, surrounded by wild weeds, delicate flowers, and complex tapestries of interwoven tree branches and leaves, as well as the beautiful effects the sky, snow, wind, and rain had on my surroundings.
I delighted in the total variety of plants and trees, the natural intricacy of their existence, and the ultimate harmony of light, colors, and textures that surrounded me.
Drawing became my escape into a world that was not only beautiful and calming but also deeply meaningful. My love of all natural settings only grew stronger as I continued my education through undergraduate and graduate fine art programs.
Influenced by the 19th century Russian landscape painters and Hudson River School painters, I cultivated a philosophical perspective. It is characterized by a profound passion for the natural world and the ability to recognize the inherent beauty present in the seemingly ordinary: in every roadside weed, blade of grass, shallow puddle, and moss-covered rock.
My landscape paintings are an honest expression of scenes observed, moments experienced, and images remembered. They are articulated through the visual vocabulary I have cultivated over years of intimate encounters with nature.
In each artwork, I try to convey the landscape’s inherent beauty while creating a sense of atmosphere for the viewer. My style can be best described as lyrical realism. I strive to create works that are both expressive and emotional, capable of being comprehended by the mind and soul alike.
In our modern world, many of us are faced with the unfortunate condition of visual indifference. This is the result of our increasingly technologically dominated existence and progressive alienation that obscures our connection to the natural world. Without an awareness of our environment, our world becomes desultory, our existence perfunctory.
It is this reality that ignited my passion to create art that not only reflects my experiences and observations, but also expresses the normative aspiration of conveying what ought to be our relationship with nature. Viewing works that reflect the splendor of the world around us can have a healing effect. The viewer is invited to experience the diversity and magnificence of nature and marvel at the complexity of our existence.
Throughout my life, I have found nature to be an inexhaustible source of ideas, an unfailing fountain of intellectual enjoyment that awakens the soul to deeper feelings of awe and wonder by lifting our spirits, triggering our imaginations and dreams, and inspiring us to strive for a gentler, more humane world. I hope that my art is able to contribute to this meaningful process by moving the viewer to find beauty in nature’s pensive, peaceful moments and reflect on the past, absorb the present, and find hope for the future.
