I have been a working artist in the Denver and Boulder area for over fifty years. I received an M.F.A. in printmaking and painting from the University of Colorado, Boulder in the 1970s and have been showing my work professionally since that time.
Throughout my early career, my work fluctuated between abstraction and realism. However, my current style of work began coming to fruition more than twenty years ago when my son was born.
I was his primary daycare provider while I worked in my studio. I’m a firm believer that we are influenced by what we are surrounded with. I became fascinated by the mark making of children—both voluntary and involuntary. The fingerprints, spills and splatters.
I began coupling that interest with my long held passion for photography, color, design, floral elements, as well as abstract and Asian aesthetics. This was further intensified by my son’s early study of the Chinese language where I was reintroduced to Asian panel painting.
I have taken liberties with these elements and transformed them into a sophisticated use of color with formal elements that contribute to the overall presentation of the work.
Much of my current work has been influenced by travels throughout the United States, Europe, Mexico, as well as walks in my own neighborhood. I do not paint in nature, but rather take photos of the natural elements which I magnify, alter, and then use as source material for my paintings.
I have been honored during my career to have been selected for many juried shows and chosen for numerous public and private collections, including those of the State of Colorado and Kaiser Permanente.
In the 1980s, my work was chosen for the Prisoners of Conscience Amnesty International Exhibition in Arvada, Colorado. I was chosen for the Invited Minority Fellowship at the Printmaking Workshop in New York.
I have always maintained an active studio practice but have enriched my career working in a professional printmaking studio, an animation studio, and teaching at colleges, universities, and art centers throughout the Denver area.
