I was born in Elyria, Ohio, a small town in the Midwest. My world was small, within a three-block area. My father worked at the factory, and my church and school were within walking distance. The grocery store and three taverns were in this space.
The family would venture to Cleveland to visit the relatives. My mother’s cousin was an X-ray technician and she had just returned on Pan Am from Hawaii. I thought I would be a technician and travel just like her.
I did become an X-ray technician. I married and had four children. When I was nineteen, my mother asked me to take her friends special needs daughter to a local framer that had art classes. I took her and the classes and never turned back. I wanted to be an artist.
Since that period of time, I have painted every moment of my life, either in my mind or directly on the canvas. My biggest art moment was when the University of Tampa purchased 53 of my paintings for the Graduate and Health Studies Building.
I have had a one woman show at the Canton Museum of Art, titled Restoration, Recycling and Remembering. I am currently exhibiting and selling my paintings in the Collectors Corner of the Toledo Museum of Art.
For 37 years of my life, I participated in outdoor art festivals. It has provided my life with continued adventures. I then took seven years off and I thought I would do no more shows, but I found I missed the adventures and my friends. I am now back on the circuit.
What I have learned over the years as I continue to push the limits of the art world is that each series has a different story. My new series Alternate Places is inspired by the intriguing concept of spirits and places. I explore how they fit in our world. I delve into pure emotion, allowing my subconscious thoughts to come out in forms of brushstrokes on my canvas.
My favorite artist is Richard Diebenkorn and I think he would approve of my new artwork. Each painting becomes a contemplation on peace and human connection and is painted on the canvas in hope of harmonizing our world. I want my art to challenge the world and make it a catalyst for change. What the world needs now is peace.
