I am an abstract artist based in New York working primarily in encaustic wax. As a young artist I was initially drawn to the study and practice of sculpture. Later as a working mother of three living in Manhattan, I found I had neither the time nor the space necessary for such a practice.
I began to experiment with different modes of painting. Quickly I discovered the seductive qualities of encaustic wax with its interesting character, texture variations, physicality, and natural ability to reveal depth.
My work reflects my love of color, movement, imagery, and process. Using simple and recognizable shapes and a strong sense of depth enables me to create compositions that wordlessly express infinite emotions, relationships, and experiences.
By applying rich surfaces and colors in veiled, translucent layers of wax and oil, I can discover intriguing, mysterious and enchanting visual worlds. I often work in a square format to give structure and form to these otherwise ethereal spaces. What I truly love about the character of encaustic wax is that it is not passive. It has a mind of its own that is always setting up challenges for me.
I find inspiration in nature and human relationships. I’m inspired by favorite artists such as Eva Hesse, Helen Frankenthaler, and Louise Bourgeois.
My training was at the Boston Museum School and Pratt Institute. For twenty-seven years, I taught middle school art at The Dalton School in New York, endeavoring to help each student find her unique voice through visual expression. I find that my roles as both artist and teacher continually overlap, influencing and driving each other.
My work can be seen in a variety of galleries and venues primarily in the New York City and Eastern Long Island areas. I am a supporter of the Museum of Encaustic Art in Santa Fe, New Mexico where my encaustic/mixed media painting, Connections III, resides in the permanent collection.
