From a young age, I was captivated by the tactile nature of clay and the joy of working with my hands. Growing up on the Northfriesian Island of Föhr, Germany, my journey with ceramics began in an after-school program during junior high.
The first time I laid my hands on a lump of clay, I was fascinated by its raw potential. Years later, after moving to Vallejo, California, I rediscovered my passion for clay in January, 2018. That moment reignited a deep connection. The studio has felt like my second home ever since.
My work is heavily influenced by mid-century modern and retro design, blended with a love for abstraction. I incorporate vibrant colors and patterns from that era into my mugs, vases, planters, and plates, creating free-flowing forms and playful compositions. Most of my work is done using underglazes. This allows me to build layers of vivid color and intricate detail.
The clean lines and bold, joyful spirit of mid-century modern design resonate with me. They balance simplicity with creativity—an energy I strive to capture in each piece. My pieces often feature motifs like mushrooms intertwined with fluid, abstract shapes that push the boundaries of functional ceramics. Nature’s organic forms and patterns meet bold, retro aesthetics, resulting in pieces that feel both familiar and fresh.
Recently, I’ve begun integrating Miró-inspired characters into my plates. These lively, whimsical figures bring an element of mischief to my work. They reflect the spontaneity I infuse into my creative process and feel like playful companions. My work invites viewers to connect with the sense of joy and fun that I hope shines through in my creations.
In terms of technique, I explore the full potential of ceramics by blending sculpture with function. My process includes hand-building, wheel-throwing, and experimenting with different glazing methods. But underglazes remain central to my practice for their versatility and vibrant color range. I approach each piece intuitively, allowing the form to emerge naturally rather than adhering to rigid guidelines.
In 2023, I had the incredible opportunity to collaborate with the de Young Museum. As part of the de Young Open, I created 72 cups and mugs for their gift shop. This collaboration was a milestone in my career. It helped me reach a wider audience and refine my artistic voice within such a renowned institution.
As I prepare for a solo show in 2025, I’m eager to expand my practice with more sculptural pieces and wall art that tell a cohesive, expressive story. My goal is to create work that resonates personally with viewers and brings color and joy into everyday spaces. Each piece reflects my journey and personality. I hope that connection resonates with those who collect and enjoy my work.
