After years away from painting, I picked up the brush again a few years ago and was thrilled to discover that my passion had not waned. I really can paint!
To build my confidence, I enrolled in art classes and tackled various challenges. All of them have contributed significantly to my growth as an artist.
My journey is fueled by a constant search for new techniques. Each time I lay my brush on the canvas, I learn something new. The exploration of composition, design, and color hues is vital to keeping our imagination and creative right brain engaged and fulfilled. Sharing my paintings with the world adds the sweetest topping to this creative endeavor.
My artistic journey is deeply inspired by an uncle who passed away before I was born. A self-taught artist skilled in painting, cartooning, and carving, he had an eidetic memory that allowed him to draw with incredible detail from memory.
A photograph of him holding a tray of his carvings of the three wisemen from the nativity scene serves as a constant source of inspiration. While I may not possess his photographic memory, I rely on photos and painting from life to create my works.
The process of selecting subject matter often begins with the numerous photos I take on the go. I meticulously choose those with the best composition, allowing me to bring out the essence of the scene. What particularly draws me to a scene are vibrant colors and intriguing designs, whether they manifest in flowers, animals, landscapes, or seascapes.
For me, painting is a liberating experience. The sense of freedom I gain through this creative process is incredibly gratifying. I am often pleasantly surprised by the beautiful results of my efforts. This element of surprise keeps me motivated and passionate about my work.
My technique is a continuous evolution. I am always eager to learn and often experiment with new methods. Typically, I start with acrylic paints to establish the base and then layer oil paints on top to achieve a richer, more textured finish. This combination of media not only enhances my paintings but also defines the uniqueness of my art.
