Photographer James Cooper uses a minimalist approach to create images that cross the boundary of nature and manmade structures. See more of his portfolio on his website.

“Barn Silhouette #4, With Bird” pigment print, unmanipulated transparency film image, 22” x 30” image on 26” x 34” paper
My image making with a camera focuses on lyrical shapes like undulating agricultural fields or the character of structures like barns.

“Barn #6” C-print, unmanipulated transparency film image, 20” x 30” image on 24” x 34” paper
I am intrigued by the thought behind the architectural design of structures like fire stations. The simplicity of forms and color in a color field are also attractive.

Some of my work also explores cultural themes, finding poignancy in objects like ATMs or ammunition bunkers. And, of course, there are the trees, each with its own unique expression of their nature and history.

“White Barn #4” c-print, unmanipulated transparency film image, 22” x 30” image on 26” x 34” paper
My approach emphasizes a philosophy where the image is solely a product of the camera and film. No manipulation is employed in producing the image.

“Field #9” c-print, unmanipulated transparency film image, 22” x 30” image on 26” x 34” paper
In using transparency film, the lens focus within the frame, the framing itself, the depth of field moving the eye within the image, and metering the light source to emphasize the character of a particular image.

These are all combined together to produce an image that hopefully creates a feeling or experience on both an aesthetic and emotional level.
Congratulations, as I admire your body of work, with consistently elegant design and deceptive simplicity (plus timing of light).
Your images are thought provoking. My favorite “Barn Silhouette #4” leaves much to the imagination.
