Although I’ve been a middle school language arts teacher for the past twenty-two years, art has always been a love. I look back to some of my favorite moments in both my k-12 education and college where art class was the best part of my day.

 

 

Always creative, I chronicled my kids’ lives through scrapbooking and have always loved a good maker’s space. I have all the door hangers, homemade pottery and wooden signs to prove it. 

 

 

Back in 2020 when the world shut down, I took it way harder than I expected. I became my kids’ teacher and was terrified they would fall behind. I relentlessly built school days full of reading and math, as well as enrichment.

 

 

At this point a lot of cool artists were hosting live Make Art with Me sessions. I started doing art with my kids and found so much joy in the daily practice. It was so good for my mental health, especially when fear and anxiety were creeping in like never before. 

 

 

I bought some cool books that had daily drawing prompts and worked to hand-letter using the mediums of watercolor, oil pastels, and colored pencils. Then I began to follow some artists on Instagram and learned about a drawing app called Procreate. I decided to give it a try, and although my early work was terrible, the daily work of creating art was really good for me and I love the ease of fixing my mistakes when drawing digitally.

 

 

Fast Forward to 2023 and I began to create art for cool businesses like Calm Strips, JIGGY Puzzles, Lake Coloring and more. I started joining drawing challenges, a great way to push the drawing limits and to keep things fresh as well. It was through challenges like this that I connected with others and ended up getting the opportunity to publish my first physical coloring book Embrace the Beauty. 

 

 

Creating art (even if sometimes it’s terrible) is valuable and important. Spending time to connect with my thoughts, take a break from the busyness of life and (hopefully) create some cool art has been such an enriching and rewarding experience.

 

 

I can’t wait to see what’s next for me and plan to make the most of every opportunity I have to sit down and make art, because it matters.
