painting of Tutoko River in New Zealand

“Tutoko River, Milford Sound” oil on canvas, 90cm x 60cm

I live in the South Island of New Zealand, surrounded by thrilling landscapes, glorious mountains, dramatic skies, braided rivers and trees. In my work I try to capture the moments which take my breath away and paint to remember those special moments.

These are moments in time that I want to share with others through my work.

“Punting on the Avon River 2” oil on canvas, 25cm x 25cm

My early life was totally consumed with music. It was my escape into another world as my painting has now become. I didn’t follow the conventional path with formal art training. However, during my working life, I tried to paint and draw in any spare time I had.

“Winter in Glenorchy” oil on canvas, 60cm x 40cm

Using watercolours by attending night classes and weekend workshops, etc. frequently filled my spare moments. Finally, when retirement beckoned, I make the decision to paint full time. Music has now become my background to support the painting.

oil painting of a coastal beach in New Zealand after a storm

“After the Storm, Kaikoura” oil on canvas, 77cm x 38cm

Four years ago I started using oils. That has been my turning point, and creates greater depth in my work. I’m glad that I used watercolours first, because while they are a challenging medium they also provide a great segue to oils.

“Mountains of the Dart River” oil on canvas, 100cm x 50cm

I love plein air painting. Listening to the sounds around me and feeling the atmosphere helps me capture the essence of the scene. I work on small panels so that I can develop larger works in the studio.

I am exceedingly grateful for the experiences I have and will continue to have. It brings such happiness and joy. I love the other artists, the shows, the exhibitions, and the new people I meet.

I never tire of talking about how I create my work and the wonderful experiences I have had. Age does not define me!
