Artist Marianne Hornbuckle shares an ethereal collection of abstract paintings inspired by physics and space. View more on her website.

“Dream 5″ acrylic, 18″ x 18”
My abstract work visually expresses my intense curiosity and growing understanding about many things. The great mystery of the universe, of cosmic energy, and my layman’s grasp of the principles of physics that undergird scientific understanding and the newest revelations of space telescopes and neuroscience. The incomplete and changing ideas about our universe continue to fascinate me.

“Space/Time Dreams 2″ acrylic, 40″ x 30”
Curious and wishing to fill some educational gaps in my life, for the ten years following the death (2015) of my artist-husband William Preston, I listened to long nonfiction books. They were about things I discovered and wanted to know more about, one topic leading intuitively to the next.

“Dream 4″ acrylic, 18″ x 18”
This experience has opened up more formal understandings of Buddhism, the evolution of man and society on this planet, general physics and now neuroscience and cosmology. I found the concepts filtering through my mind and imagination. They emerged in my painting practice to fuel new imagery. The new pieces are visual expressions of new understanding that I could not express any other way.

“Awe and Wonder 2″ acrylic,12″ x 12”
Enjoy my ethereal cosmic abstracts. They express the mysteries of the universe being uncovered and toppling long-held beliefs. These discoveries are being documented by both the Hubble and James Webb Telescopes. Their ramifications are being discussed and explained by astrophysicists and cosmologists around the world.

“Dream 7″ acrylic, 16″ x 16”
My painting practice has grown to include imagery created experimentally out of my long experience with both watercolor and acrylic. With the newer mediums and surfaces becoming available, my process has become more experimental.

“Awe and Wonder 1″ acrylic, 12″ x 12”
Using acrylic pigment, water, and gravity, I am now deep into creating work in which I control only color choices, viscosity of paint, and what I choose to do next.

“Space/Time Dreams 5: The Multiverse” acrylic, 60″ x 40″
I make abstractions that create translucent and mysterious images and evoke the cosmos. Through my painting I express a sense of curiosity and fascination with all that I do not know.
