Broaching the Subject

“Broaching the Subject”, oil on canvas 28″ x 42″, 2012

My artwork is colorful, intricate and lively. I use a visual vocabulary that includes ornamentation in the form of pattern and repetition.

The Concept of Symmetry

“The Concept of Symmetry”, oil on canvas 36″ x 60″, 2013

Some of my work is abstract but referential, and some include images, usually in the form of line drawings. My paintings call to mind a range of associations from mandalas, the cosmos, cells, lace, brocade and more.

Topkapi

“Topkapi”, oil on canvas 28″ x 36″, 2011

I was born in Taiwan, raised in Brazil, Oklahoma and Texas. I attended both college and graduate school in the United States, yet my aesthetic sensibility has remained essentially eastern.

Closer and Closer

“Closer and Closer”, oil on canvas 28″ x 42″, 2013

The Far East (and the Middle East) has a long tradition of ornamental art and architecture, and it is from this source that my artwork springs. I have traveled widely and think of myself as a citizen of the world. My work is multicultural in an almost literal sense of the word.

We Spin a World

“We Spin a World”, oil and wax on canvas, 48″ x 72″, 2013

I take from the tradition of Indian and Tibetan mandalas, Japanese floral patterns, Brazilian colors, Western illusionistic painting, and contemporary painting vocabulary.

The Invention of the Wheel

“The Invention of the Wheel”, oil on canvas 36″ x 60″, 2012

I have a reverence for tradition and I feel indebted to all that has come before me. Within this framework I work to push the boundaries of my understanding of what painting is or can be.

Pssst!

“Pssst!”, oil on canvas 24″ x 24″, 2012

I love beauty, and I am aware of making beautiful paintings. Yet beauty as an end in itself doesn’t seem quite enough to me. I think of myself as someone who creates worlds within worlds with the aim of revealing profound, contemplative, slow truths.

  3. Hi Kathryn,

Thank you. I’m having some shows in the new year. If you’d like to receive my twice-a-year email newsletter, send me your email and I’ll add you to my email address list.

  4. Amy,
I have always been an admirer of yours. Your paintings are absolutely stunning. They show the creative development of one mind inspired by color, light, form, decoration, under-layers/over-layers( space), merging of simplicity and complexity…and so much more. I salute you and applaud you. May you bask in beauty.

  5. Hi Gloria,
Thank you for your kind words. It means a lot to me that you have looked at my work so closely.

You are an inspiration yourself, starting New York Artists Online, teaching yoga, painting, maintaining the Beauty/Art/Yoga website… I LOVE the recipes !

Since I have your attention, let me run something by you – It seems to me some of the NYAC members are particularly enterprising – like you, China Marks, Liz Quizguard, Barbara Rachko (there must be others, but these are who I can think of off the top of my head). Would you be interested, if I organized a get-together in NYC, in meeting up to exchange ideas? We all have strengths, different strengths, and if we had a meeting where we made presentations about the things we are particularly good at doing and how we do it, it might be informative and inspiring. You can reach me at [email protected].

    Best,
    Amy
