Photorealist and miniature artist Debra Keirce creates oil and acrylic paintings that invite you to look closer. Check her website for current exhibitions and the latest off her easel.
My greatest goal is to present art that resonates. Using my talent to connect with people in a profound way is the thrill that motivates me. To achieve this, I work hard to connect with gallery owners and museum curators.
Currently, I am working on a series of paintings I’m calling “Verbal Visions.” The Trompe L’Oeil compositions honor the minimalists of the 1960’s, the decade I was created in. Each tells a story by combining several miniature fine art images. My specialty is working under a magnifying lens to capture extreme details on small canvases.
What inspires me is life. I paint from experiences that evoke emotion. Recent trips include a mission trip to Belize and travel to many U.S. cities. Follow me, and you will see paintings from photo references taken on each of these adventures.
Growing up in Detroit in the 1970’s, I was always drawn to realism. This was a time when expressionism and modern art were valued while realism and illustration were devalued. I went with my left-brain and became a biochemical engineer. After 15 fun years in the corporate pharmaceuticals world, I was able to pursue my passion. My engineering career is a huge part of me, and is reflected in my art.
Maybe this is why I enjoy still life and urban landscapes. Painting repetitive, detailed patterns of shapes and colors always puts me in a meditative, creative zone. I paint abstractly and then step back to enjoy the realism that occurs when you combine these elements. It’s such a dichotomy – just like me!
Almost a year ago, I was thrilled to be signed on as an artist at two very successful galleries. Huckleberry Fine Art in Rockville, MD and Seaside Art Gallery in Nags Head, NC welcomed me into a community of art lovers I am honored to “hang” with.
I’ve learned that the life of an artist is best lived without a rigid plan. The engineer in me wants to overanalyze each opportunity. I’m slowly learning to get out of my head and go with the flow. It’s something I wish for all your readers – especially those who took the time to read all the way to the end of my feature…Trust your inner artist, hang on, and enjoy the ride. I am!
