Australian artist Eve Izzett has always been drawn to color. Inspired by the bright colors of the tropics, she uses a bold palette in her animal portraits. Visit her website to see more.
Creating a painting can be very similar to creating music – color, mood, theme, composition. All the different elements link and flow into a visual ensemble. It’s all about patterns; the relationship between elements and fitting things together in a way that makes sense but still inspires beyond what is found in day to day life.
After studying music at university, I stumbled through a number of other options before finding my home in painting a few years ago. I have not looked back since.
Living in tropical Australia, the bold, bright colours of the sea and rainforest are a constant source of inspiration.
I love how easily a mood can be created just by the choice of palette before you even give a theme to a painting. The number of combinations and moods are almost endless.
I try to combine a clear strong image with slightly abstract colour choices to create something both easily recognisable yet still slightly unexpected. This has worked particularly well with the animal portraits that form a large proportion of my work at the moment.
Color has always been at the heart of my artistic journey and I think will always be central to my work.
As a mostly self-taught visual artist, I also believe strongly that we as artists need to keep experimenting, trying new techniques and mediums in order to grow and develop.
My own work has started to diverge into two quite distinctly different directions. One is the bold, clear acrylics which are the style I started out with and have been tweaking and playing with ever since.
More recently, I’ve been using a watercolor like effect (still created using acrylic paint) which gives a much softer, more dreamlike feel to the paintings.
For the first time I’m working on a series of paintings that will be released as prints, as well as contracting some works to an Australian decor company for creating homewares. There is much more to come. Exactly what it will be, I’m not sure yet.
My journey is only beginning. I’m looking forward to seeing where it will take me next.
