My name is Chris Gray and I am an artist doing my own thing in San Antonio, Texas. I would call my style Tribal Influenced Abstract Art.

The process of creating art is relaxing to me. I am creating something new and that is the favorite part of my work. I can create anything if I have the knowledge to do it. I define art as creativity plus knowledge.

It all begins with design. I like strong lines and I strive to achieve movement in each piece. There are usually circular shapes in my pieces, this helps move your eye across the artwork. The hash marks–a signature in my work–give each piece depth and texture.

Then comes my color scheme. I usually start with one main color; then chose complimentary and contrasting colors, depending on how the piece makes me feel.

I have a BA in Art from Texas A&M Corpus Christi. Art has always been a part of my life; however, I never thought it could be a way to make a living until I went to college. Struggling to figure out what I wanted to do with my life, I took my first drawing class and I was hooked. This inspired me to pursue art. Art became my driving need and focus.

Over the past fifteen years my work has become more concise. My work has a lot of pieces and as I have developed and grown as an artist, the movement in my work has become more purposeful. I feel that my style is unique to me and identifiable to others.

I am influenced by the pop art of Warhol, Lichtenstein and Keith Haring. I am also a fan of the abstract expressionists Pollock, Rothko and Mark Toby. Another large influence for me is the art of Polynesian, Indonesian and Native American tribes.

The public’s response to my artwork has been fantastic. Many viewers have commented about my unique style and are always intrigued about my process. My representational art, usually animals, is very popular with the public whereas my abstract works have been popular with other artists. The biggest question I get is “how long did it take you to create this?” I tend work on several pieces at once; but, on average, my larger pieces take 40-60 hours to complete.

My current goal is to work on a grander scale. I like the challenge of taking the detail in my art and scaling it to murals and larger wall pieces. I also would like to participate in more juried shows and competitions outside of Texas.
