I’ve been drawing and painting for so long that it has become involuntary. For me it’s like breathing. It is something that just happens. Either I’m painting or thinking about the next painting.

 

 

My paintings, though realistic in style, are usually composed of vivid, colorful and abstract shapes.

 

 

I’m fascinated by the refraction and reflection of light twisting and dancing through translucent objects, creating beautiful, vibrant shapes. I love the way light touches an object for a fleeting second, and then it’s gone.

 

 

That’s why photography is essential to my painting process. It is the way I capture that momentary light. I’m always on the hunt for the subject of my next painting. I try and take my camera with me everywhere. I just never know where I will find it. It could be the local diner or supermarket. Or usually, my own kitchen or bedroom.

 

 

Some artists will say the subject of their work is not important. It’s the technique or the style one uses to render the subject that is essential. For me, it begins with the subject and that’s what gets me going.

 

 

Like an actor putting on the character’s wardrobe to help him or her get inside the person they are portraying, I start with the superficial to get to the essential.

 

 

My medium of choice is usually watercolor. I find watercolor to be a true partner. I’ve discovered when I accept its influence, wonderful things can happen. It has taught me that control is not always a good thing. Like life, I have learned to accept what it will give me and move on.
