The basic foundation of my work is the simplification and abstraction of the human form, to which I add paint, paper and ink to literally flesh out the design. My work is very textural, colorful and layered.
For as long as I can remember, I have loved working with different materials, and truly enjoy the process of mixed media. Sometimes I feel like I am painting with paper. I find myself adding and subtracting elements to build the compositions.
I manipulate the surface of my work by utilizing a variety of techniques, and incorporate my own painted papers as well as found papers, text and maps.
Dependent upon the substrate, be it paper or canvas, I will use paint or ink as a dominant layer. Collage techniques are applied with an acrylic medium on canvas or by the chine-collé process on paper.
As I work with a variety of media, I am quite aware that while the media utilized is interesting, the imagery that I create is the message.
My art is about the commonality of humanity.
Many pieces contain an abstracted figure portraying the sense of being alone in a crowded world. I often include topographical and road maps, which have been overlaid with lines of various lengths and thicknesses. The maps and lines represent ways in which people navigate their daily lives.
There are many twists and turns to a day, and many ways to problem solve; sometimes they are clear cut, while other times the road less traveled is the best approach.
I continually push myself to expand my visual horizons through each piece I create. A long time ago, I learned that art is hard work. The most difficult aspect is not in the techniques used, but rather in the ideas expressed and explored. For me there is a growth process when a piece is finished, or a series completed.
I strive to create work that continually moves forward, basing new on the past to follow an artistic process journey and not just a singular road to a product destination.
