I have a deep connection with color. I love it. Plain and simple. I will always find a way to introduce this tasty ingredient to my work because I don’t know what my creative world would be without it!
Have you ever caught an insect and looked at it extremely close up? Oh, what a favorite past time! I have a natural curiosity about other beings.
I love the details. It makes me want to express them through paint and bring them to life on canvas.
It’s when I study the details that I begin to connect.
It’s a soul connection. It’s a connection born of shared space and time, rock and planet, sky and universe. I can see the connection through their eyes, I can feel it in the bristle of their fur or the ruffle of their feathers. And I hope that I’m able to do their magnificence justice.
I love to paint from my own photographs. Photographing can be the first stage in my observation period before a painting. I’m not always lucky enough to do it.
In any case, research about the subject matter prepares me for executing the proper proportions and detail.
This observation period can often begin during the research and photography stage. I don’t just wish to paint the critter, I want to know what he eats, where he lives, who he dates!
Having been a professional sign writer, I was steeped in solvent for many years. This is one of the reasons I gravitated toward acrylics. I love the vibrancy of color, the ease of application and clean up and the speed at which I can work.
And although it shares a stall in a stable of mediums that I like to play with, painting will always be a necessary form of communication for me.

Love these! I like painting animals up close too but you have taken it to a different level. Super job showing their personalities! <3
Thank you, Jill DeFelice, for the kind words!
