Artist Valerie Vescovi paints energetic and colorful scenes of jazz and salsa clubs in a style she calls Rhythmic Cubism. More of her expressive art can be found on her website.
I have painted my whole life.
Even as a child I was given oil paints and pretty much left to my own devices. An autodidact, I would paint pictures from books. I painted on my walls in my bedroom—and the door. My family liked my paintings and didn’t complain.
I experimented. Once, I squeezed the oils onto a piece of canvas that I put on the floor. I then danced around on it, leaving my white Keds on the painting. When it was dry, I hung it. After a while one of the shoes fell off. I wish I had a picture of it.
As I got older, I took my art more seriously. I became involved in art groups and hung out with artists. I did some street shows and got into some galleries over the years.
I painted on-site for many years where I learned the most. Painting from life is educational, to say the least.
I painted in bars and restaurants and in the street, painting cafes and night life, jazz clubs with live music, Latin jazz, salsa clubs. My paintings of bars and musicians have morphed into my Rhythmic Cubist style.
Even though I still experiment and stretch my creativity, I always go back to my dancers and musicians who deconstruct into tempo, music, movement and color.
I have a nice body of work and am entirely online now. I have a website and am on several online galleries, and prefer them over brick and mortar galleries who try to possess you.
I paint on a wide range of canvas sizes to make myself affordable to more people. I like to work out a composition on a small canvas before I paint the larger work. I’m also on several print on demand sites, which offer an array of items with my paintings on them and are affordable.
The best way to succeed in this business is to hang in there.
