My art career has been a bumpy ride.
Although I knew as a young girl that I wanted to be an artist, I also knew that my parents would not look favorably on such a dream. I tucked the dream away.
After I married, I was crushed to find that medical issues made it impossible for me to conceive children. If the expected path to motherhood was denied me, I thought maybe I could have my dream of becoming an artist.
I told my husband that I wanted to study commercial art, so he sent me to art school. I studied graphic design and graduated with honors, landing a job in advertising design. While I loved art school, I didn’t like the advertising world. I quit.
I took a different tack—if commercial art was not for me, maybe fine art would suit me better.
I started to show and sell my pencil renderings of lush garden scenes. They were well received, and I won awards in local art shows. I thought I had found my niche and things were going well. But then, my husband became ill and died.
Afterwards, I half-heartedly tried painting and showing my work, but I found my expectations unmet. I stopped making art for a living and took a regular job. Years passed.
Eventually, I came back full circle to the world of making art. I no longer work a regular job. I’ve been painting in earnest for almost five years and I feel I’ve achieved a good level of success in a short time.
Not only does my work sell, but I have also been accepted as a member into prestigious juried artist groups, been published in periodicals and an online (Thought Art) magazine. I have won several awards, both national and international.
The journey to this place in my life has been a little bumpy, but I look forward with anticipation to more success as I continue to refine my artistic skills.
In the end, I want to look back on my life and say, “It may have been bumpy ride, but I finally got to live my dream!”
