Artist Soo Kim presents a collection of flowing, luminous abstract works with alcohol ink and gold accents. Find more of her elegant portfolio on her website.
I am a mixed media artist working with alcohol inks.
I use a heat gun to create “flow” across the page, blending different colors, adding touches of gold, strokes, and fine lines to tell a story.
I fell in love with the medium as it was so soothing and calming. During the pour, my entire focus is on controlling the inks and creating the right composition as they dry.
I love that I can’t get any other thoughts in my head while creating. It’s almost more of a release of energy, like I’m pouring my emotions onto the canvas.
My past life as an art director helps me visualize and create the right movement and flow. I want my collectors to breathe, rewind and energize while living with my artwork. I truly believe artwork heals the soul. It does for me.
I was born in South Korea where I was fortunate enough to attend a private art school, Sunwha Arts. My studies continued in California and in New York City.
I’ve always done my own personal artwork. Professionally I became an art director, working in the fashion and beauty industries until I realized it was my time to pursue my passion. I loved the creative process of my job, but I was never fully satisfied within.
Now I hold classes in my art studio and design collections and accept commissions. Teaching young students has given me so much joy. I love to inspire students as they inspire me.
I love sharing my techniques and introducing students to new mediums. Watching a student find his or her voice as an artist is as fulfilling as creating a new beautiful piece of art.
I am currently focused on building new collections, and bringing my work to the attention of larger audiences like the Art Expo New York City and Superfine Art Fair in New York City. I am ready to color the world!
