When I was young, I spent much time roaming the fields and pastures in the Midwest where I lived. Sometimes I found arrowheads and stone hammers and other artifacts. They were left by people who lived there previously.

 

 

I always wondered about who left them and when they were there. Maybe a hundred years ago, or perhaps thousands of years ago; I had no way of knowing.

 

 

I’m still intrigued by people and places, both past and present. I have painted many paintings depicting not only rural areas, but also urban areas, small towns and the people and animals that live there.

 

 

Everything is constantly changing, including the landscape. In twenty years, the world will be entirely different than it is right now.

 

 

I paint with oil in my home studio, mostly from photographs that I have taken in this area or in my travels. I use painting knives for most of my painting because I like the control and versatility. Sometimes I use brushes, but I quickly revert back to knives because they seem to lend themselves quite well to the way I paint.

 

 

For inspiration, I listen to music. I can’t listen to good music without getting inspired to paint, or do anything, for that matter. I’d listen to music all day and all night if I could. Some people have told me they’d just as soon have it quiet. I suppose that’s okay for them, but it’s a concept I can’t really understand. To me, music is like color. You could paint just in gray tones, and I have, but color is so much better and it’s better yet with music!

 

 

I have done many different things in my life, from farming to factory work and from building and road construction to machinery and tool salesman and even musician. I’ve generally enjoyed everything I have done.

 

 

However, if you would ask me now what my favorite workday would be, I would have to say that being in my studio with a painting brush or knife in my hand and my favorite tunes blaring away with a favorite beverage nearby would be hard to beat! I love it and hope to do it for as long as I can pick up a paint brush. Hopefully others will get inspiration from my paintings and feel the same passion!
