Several years ago, I made the confident decision to leave the misty landscapes of the northwest behind. I followed my heart to the sun-kissed allure of Southern California.
I love how the palm trees sway in the gentle ocean breeze and the diverse plant life. The serene landscapes all enveloped me in a sense of inspiration. It was amidst this natural beauty that a creative spark ignited within me, setting the stage for my journey as an artist.
Immersing myself in the Southern California surroundings, I drew inspiration from the works of Henri Matisse during a visit to the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. The exhibition showcased Matisse’s revolutionary use of color and simplified forms in the 20th century. It featured bold colors, simple room depictions, and scenic beauty. His masterful use of color, shapes, decorative wallpapers, and even a humble goldfish in a bowl captivated me.
Drawing from my encounters with Matisse’s art, I embarked on a creative journey to incorporate his style into my own artistic vision.
In my process, I start by applying large, bold blocks of paint (acrylic mediums) as the foundation and underpaint for my compositions. I then cut out hand-painted papers to build layers of geometric simple shapes, adding depth and texture to the artwork.
By incorporating paper collaging, I create a bold, colorful, and contrasting look. This invites viewers to explore a world of wonder and creativity.
Having honed my artistic skills through art schools over the years and earning a degree in industrial illustration, I was well-prepared for my dedication to becoming an artist. I had a successful career as a cabinet designer, bringing my artistic vision to life in functional and aesthetic ways.
However, my passion for art never waned. In 2021, I retired to fully dedicate myself to my dream of becoming a full-time artist. This transition marked a new chapter in my artistic exploration. It allowed me to immerse myself full time in creativity and enjoyment. I want to share my vision with the world through vibrant and captivating artworks.
