An oil landscape painter and the owner of Smiling Horse Studios (because, yes, I have a horse that smiles), I’m Jane Mishkind.

 

 

With studios in Ohio and Arizona, I’ve always found inspiration in the profound expressions of nature, using intuition to guide the piece. I paint to heal and to capture the soothing elements of the environment around us, but I also paint to provide opportunities for reflection and peace.

 

 

When my work is carefully selected to complement the entrance of a boutique hotel, or for a cozy nook in a curated apartment, I feel incredibly honored. The artwork, after all, is intended for pondering and encapsulating stories.

 

 

I’m not the type to label or name my work, preferring to let the interpretation speak individually to each viewer. That being said, if there were a phrase to describe my work, it would be “poetic landscapes,” artwork that encourages contemplation.

 

 

While my work is created with the elegant and distinguished techniques of the old-world masters, I am aware of the future impact of my work. To be mindful and respectful of the earth that never ceases to beautifully influence me, I use naturally-made pigments and plant a tree with each order.

 

 

As for the creative process itself, it’s a moving meditation to me. The hours vanish as I work off the easel, telling the story of a quiet, yet sometimes dramatic dialogue. My dogs don’t mind—there’s usually a warm patch of sunshine to sleep in nearby.

 

 

One of my most recent pieces, the largest, is the one I dared to paint right off the wall. The easel wouldn’t suffice, and it was a powerful exploration. Interestingly enough, though, it was another piece—a smaller one—in which I found the most meaning and intrigue. It was one of those paintings that is never really finished. I’m always taking it down and adding more glaze, finding peace in the silence and joy in the meditative pinks and yellows that peek out of the sky.
