I am drawn particularly to people and animals for my subject matter and my sketchbooks are full of faces and figures, both cartoony and realistic.

The paintings are not about anyone in particular, but about capturing a common experience, memory or idea. Most of us have experienced the sound of bubbles rushing past our ears, the broken ribbons of sunlight, bizarre reflections and the weightless, slow dance of movement below the surface.

Pastels are so wonderfully tactile and allow me to draw fine details or lay in large blocks of color. Textured patterns or smooth transitions, there really are no limits to what this medium will allow me to create.

Everything I do is freehand. I never use rulers, compasses, magnifying glasses or computers. I primarily work in watercolor and pen and ink. My goal is to make the two mediums complement each other. I love the loose, almost messy watercolor, mixed with the intricate details that I hand draw on top.

I’ve long been captivated by pastels and am enthralled by the immediacy and intensity of their colours and their incredible versatility.

From the moment I tried colored pencils I was hooked. Their sharp points allow me to draw fine details and by applying light layers of multiple colors I can achieve any hue.

My art work explores aspects of our natural world and human experience. I intend to discover the inner beauty of things and the complexities of life, the natural environment that represents life, the water that nourishes the earth with fertility, knowledge and the evolution of life.

My inspiration for my art comes from subjects who have or had a difficult way of life. People who have the misfortune of being homeless and animals that are abused.

My circadian rhythms were off and I was nocturnal so I started working through the night, invoking nighttime’s mystical energy while simultaneously honoring my own cycles. My excessive REM cycles gave me intense and vivid dreams so I started drawing them.

Details such as the varying and subtle changes of colour and shape in a flower’s petal or the blossoming of dappled sunlight on it’s surroundings—these are the things that inspire me to create.
